CARRIE'S CURTAINS

Carrie's curtians one

I recently finished these RECYCLED FIBER CURTAINS for my friend Carrie's home office.  The three curtain panels measure 8 feet high by 12 wide.  They are batiked recycled kraft paper.  I crumple the kraft paper over and over until it becomes soft.  After I dye and wax the the paper it becomes like a leathery translucent fabic.  The color floods the room and creates a beautiful glow. We decided on green curtains because Carrie's home office is in the wealth and prosperity area of her home according to the Feng Shui layout of her home.  The wealth and prosperity area is a great place for green plants, wood and objects that represent wealth.  I've learned to never underestimate the power of intention when applied to home spaces!

THE DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO MOUNTAINS

This is a a light box I made earlier this year titled, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO MOUNTAINS.  I donated this piece to the CASCADE AIDS PROJECT'S annual art auction. 2009 will be the 20 year anniversary of the event!

If anyone has any suggestions on how to photograph a light box, please let me know.  I am working on another light box for a show at the BEPPU WIARDA gallery in January and will need images.  I only had a short time to work on getting images of this piece and as you can see it could be improved on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

20 YEAR HIGH SCHOOL REUNION

P1040682

These are my girls!!!! JENIFER DOUST, MICHELLE BATTLES, AND ME!! This is my posse from High School!  I just got back from my 20 yr high school reunion in Brown Deer, Wisconsin.  Brown Deer is a suburb of Milwaukee.  It was so great to see everyone.  There was a lot of love at that reunion.

The highlight of the reunion for me was seeing MARLO MARTIN, pictured left of me and FRANCIS ESSIEN, pictured to the left of MARLO.  Francis, Marlo and I were all varsity cheerleaders together.  Yes, I was a cheerleader, and I loved it. We competed, traveled, danced and had so much fun.  We actually competed in a national cheer leading competition in Nashville.  Marlo and Francis are two absolutely gorgeous, loving, fun, open-hearted people that I am fortunate to know.

"YOU BETCHA"

Cynthia's 101st birthday w me

Two and a half years ago my husband Adam and I were inspired by a movie called “Assisted Living” featuring real residents of an elderly assisted living facility. After the movie we talked about how we “should” visit old people.  Another thing on the “should” list.

The next day I saw a listing in the weekly paper for volunteers to spend time with seniors through the State of Oregon Ombudsman Program.  This was clearly a sign from the universe that we could not ignore.  So we stopped “shoulding” and took action.  We were interviewed and trained by other volunteers and we are now official volunteers.  Our only job is to elevate loneliness with seniors 4 hours a month.

We were quickly matched up with a facility very close to our home and the activities director paired us with the resident that she thought would most benefit from our visits.

Well…..our lives have never been the same since we met our beloved Cynthia.  Cynthia is 102 years old and she is the funniest person we know. If you tell her that she looks nice she looks around her pockets for a quarter to give you.  She calls me “mumma”.  She calls Adam “big boy”, and she calls herself an “old bag.”  Cynthia is also famous amongst the other residents for her “colorful language” and her catch phrase, “you betcha”!

One of the first things she told us when we first met her in 2006 was that she liked animals and people too.  We have come to learn that she probably likes animals more than people.  Cynthia and I both love to look at animal books and make animal sounds together. Cynthia can do a mean owl and you wouldn’t want to mess with her when she does her dog growl, seriously.

I could write so much more about our dear friend but I will just tell you that it is true that when you give - you get more in return.

At 102, Cynthia has outlived every person she knew throughout her life.  We are the only people that visit her.  She is our family and we are hers.  Cynthia posing on her 101st birtday!

QWERTY-NESS

When I am not creating new designs for URBAN BIRD, I work on larger fine art pieces using a batik process on paper.  I was invited to share the August-September show at Office on Alberta Street in Portland, Oregon, with Office owner Tony Secolo.  Office is an award winning design store, art gallery and design studio. If you need a cool laptop bag or want to hang out with cool creatives, Office is the place to be. Visit www.officepdx.com to see more.

Tony’s enthusiasm for typewriters inspired this QWERTY show.  QWERTY is the top line of letters on a keyboard.  I picked out a word that starts with each letter and then randomly typed that word, using one of Tony’s vintage typewriters, on old blank book pages.  Then, I dropped hot soy wax on each letter which then resists the dyes I paint into the paper.  After waxing out and then removing all the wax, I cut out squares from the batiked paper, glue them down, sand it all and apply lots of varnish.  Here are the words I picked for each letter:

Q – QUEST

W – WIZARD

E – EXPECT

R – REWARD

T – TEACH

Y – YOURSELF

My fine art process is much more abstract than what you see in my greeting card designs.  Exploring my medium gives me new ideas and insights that I can then apply to my card designs.  Thanks Tony, for an occasion to use my paper process in a fresh way.

The world is on your side

Theworldisonyoursidew_4 Theworldisonyoursidew_3 I have been a working artist my entire adult life.  Fortunately, I had the good sense to choose a partner who “gets me” and has done everything to encourage my creativity. I can’t begin to share my artistic endeavors with the world without you all knowing that there is a beautiful, generous and nurturing man that supports my vision in every way and has for over 16 years.  I am overwhelmed with gratitude for this man.

Thank you Adam.

So with that said, let the bloggin begin……..Chances are you found my blog through my www.urbanbirddesigns.com website that features my greeting card line, URBAN BIRD DESIGNS. I will be sharing information about URBAN BIRD news as well as my fine art work and other projects.

I’ve titled my blog “THE WORLD IS ON YOUR SIDE” after one of my favorite greeting card designs. I was inspired by the word pronoia.

pronoia : a conspiracy of goodness in the world working on your behalf.

When you start to think of all the things that go right everyday and the little miracles that are occurring at every moment from the refrigerator that keeps your food cold to the breathing that keeps you alive, it is humbling.  The fact that I got a blog up and running is proof of this conspiracy. If you told me a month ago that I would be bloggin…………But here I am ready to share with you, through my artwork, the magic and possibilities that I know exist for us all.

So blog readers, thanks for the visit and when you come back you can look forward to learning more about URBAN BIRD, seeing my artwork and process and more proof that the THE WORLD IS ON YOUR SIDE.
